This session took place on the Santa Monica Pier — one of California’s most visited landmarks — with a mother and daughter traveling internationally and figuring out what to do during their time in Los Angeles. Visiting the pier was already high on their list, but adding a photo experience turned it into something more: a way to create and preserve a special bond from their trip. They didn’t speak any English, and I didn’t speak their language, but with Google Translate on a phone, we found a way to communicate. A few words, some gestures, and the natural flow of walking, stopping, and photographing took care of the rest.
I recommended we skip the original session time and instead shoot at sunset — the best light of the day — and what you’ll see in these images is the result of that decision.
To get to the pier, you walk down a broad concrete path closed to cars. Street vendors line the way here and there — a few selling snacks, others offering souvenirs — but mostly it’s people you notice: families, friends, couples, all moving toward the ocean. And then, beyond them, the view opens up. The horizon stretches wide, the sky begins to warm with the colors of sunset, and the Pacific rolls out endlessly beneath it. It’s simple, but standing there, with all that space and light, you can feel why this place draws so many people.
